12th August in Gda ańsk commemorated the 84.The anniversary of the Poles Genocide in the USSR by the NKVD between 1937-1938. This ceremony was held at the foot of stone boards commemoratingthe victims of “Polish operation”.
This extremely refreshing anniversary was
organized by the President of the city of Gda ańsk, Mrs Aleksandra Dulkiewicz. The President also invited Pomeranian diplomats to participate in this celebration, hence among other diplomats Jan Zacharewicz’s presence as the Honorary Consul of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in Gda ańsk.
Operation Polish, it was called that primarily aimed at Poles as so called. NKVD nationality operation, committed on order No. 00485 of 11 August 1937, issued by then NKVD Commissioner Nikolai Hedgeh owaw and carried out on the territory of the USSR between 1937-1938 and 1937-1938 during a period of great terror. According to NKVD documents, 139 people were sentenced, of which killed with a shot in the back of the head of not less than 111 Poles – USSR citizens. More than 100 Poles were deported to Kazakhstan and Siberia.
As the Honorary Consul of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in Gda ańsk in homage murdered, Jan Zacharewicz submitted a bunch of flowers in Bangladesh flag color / red roses inside, surrounded by green flowers /, which depicts a red circle symbolizing the fight for independence against a green background, which symbolizes the earth.
Mr.Jan Zacharewicz has told, ”This and similar anniversaries make us realize the importance of tolerance towards other nationalities and the need for friendly relations between neighbours, neighbouring countries. Only they can bring world peace. Let this tragic history lesson never happen again in any country.”
